We established our olive grove some 15 years ago in our backyard with different types of olives from baby Kalamata for oil to the beautiful Klamatas for pickling to other three varietits also for oil. There are about 35 olive trees at the moment in the grove, that is beside the other fruit trees from Guava, passion fruit, vineyards, pomegranate and we even have two karoub trees we planted from seeds and are now producing delicious karoub pods.We used to have in our house more than 50 olive trees, when they started to get large and the olive trees increased in height the number of trees was reduced to 35 trees of different kinds ; Kalamata, manazalino, verdale and baby calamata,
Marsail also used to organize the collection of olives from the church farm. There used to be more than 70 olive trees. There are more varieties of olive in the church farm beside the usual types of calamata, manazalino, verdale and baby calamata there were jumbo calamata, olive picual, Hardy's mamoth , and Frantoio, Arbequina.
Olive collection usual takes place between late April and early May, The dates are controlled by the weather and the availability of place in the pressing que at the time. Olive collection is usually start in our house, where are few friends and family gather and all the olive from the trees is collected in one day and taken to the pressers either in the same evening or early the next morning so that the produced oil will be as virgin oil. the harvest ranges between 200 to 500 kilos, as when the trees grow higher we prune them to a manageable height, and in this case the harvest decrease.
The church olives also is collected in one day by few volunteers and Marsail friend sand family , we also take it to the pressers next day, because it takes the whole day and late to the night to collect the harvest in one day. In exceptional good year, the church olives require more than one weekend. The harvest ranges between 300 to 1000 kg.
It is very important that we teach our children and grandchildren from young age the importance of planting trees and teach them to collect and harvest the products in a controlled manner. Sunday schools s and the church community must also share in theis festive of olive harvesting.
